  • Almost 50% of our London sample don't know anyone who has had COVID-19 or related symptoms. Out of the other half, over 4% live with someone who currently has coronavirus symptoms.
     
  • Approximately 80% of our sample don't have children at all or don't have children that require supervision. Over 9%, however, are minding their children while working remotely, and over 2.50% are still paying childcare fees despite not having access to this service.

Out of the thousands who completed our survey in London, 50.91% are currently employed in full-time or part-time jobs.

Most of them – approximately 73% – are currently working remotely (both full or part-time), while 20% are unable to work from home (for example, construction workers). Although in full or part-time employment, over 6% are currently not working due to the fact they are in furlough or have COVID-19 symptoms and are self-isolating.

Although only 1.20% of our London sample identified themselves as business owners, this number still provides an idea of how entrepreneurs are handling the impact of COVID-19.

Approximately 5% of our London sample are key workers. Whilst the vast majority – 75.88% – of these key workers don't have anyone in their care, 18.23% are taking care of their children on a full or part-time capacity (only 1.49% have access to childcare/school), and 5.88% have adults at home requiring care.

 South West  
 
  • 59% of our South West sample don't know anyone who has had COVID-19 or related symptoms. Out of the remaining sample, over 3% live with someone who currently has coronavirus symptoms.
     
  • 71% of our sample don't have children at all or don't have children that require supervision. Over 15.6%, however, are minding their children while working remotely (a significantly higher number compared to the 9% in London), and over 4.3% are still paying childcare fees despite not having access to this service (again, a bigger percentage of people compared to London).

Out of our South West sample, 57.1% are currently employed in full-time or part-time jobs.

Most of them – approximately 66% – are currently working remotely (both full or part-time), while almost 25% are unable to work from home (for example, construction workers). Although in full or part-time employment, 8.4% are currently not working due to the fact they are in furlough or have COVID-19 symptoms and are self-isolating.

Please note, only a small number of people identified themselves as business owners in this location – more specifically 1.78% of our South West sample. Although this is representative of the wider population, we do consider the sample small in comparison with London.

8.9% of our South West sample are key workers. Whilst the majority – 60.8% – of these key workers don't have anyone in their care, 33.9% are taking care of their children on a full or part-time capacity (only 2% have access to childcare/school), and 5.2% have adults at home requiring care.

 North West  
 
  • 63% of our North West sample don't know anyone who has had COVID-19 or related symptoms. Out of the remaining sample, over 2% live with someone who currently has coronavirus symptoms.
     
  • 71% of our sample in this location don't have children at all or don't have children that require supervision. Over 15.4%, however, are minding their children while working remotely (a significantly higher number compared to the 9% in the London area), and only 0.8% are still paying childcare fees despite not having access to this service – a lower percentage than in the rest of the country.

Although in full or part-time employment, 10.8% are currently not working due to the fact they are in furlough or have COVID-19 symptoms and are self-isolating.

 How COVID-19 is affecting self-employed professionals in the North West 

Only 10% of our North West sample are self-employed – a proportionally smaller part of the population when compared to the south of the country –, a demographic severely impacted by the pandemic.

The amount of self-employed/freelancer professionals both working from home and unable to work from home is very similar, which differs from the rest of the country where most of these professionals work in industries where remote work is possible.

Almost 11% of our North West sample describe themselves as key workers. Whilst the majority of these key workers don't have anyone in their care, the 22% that have children under their care are receiving support. 5% of these key workers have adults at home requiring care.

  • 66% of our Midlands sample don't know anyone who has had COVID-19 or related symptoms. Out of the remaining sample, 2.7% live with someone who currently has coronavirus symptoms.
     
  • 63% of our sample in this location don't have children at all or don't have children that require supervision. Close to 20%, however, are minding their children while working remotely (the highest percentage in the areas analysed), and over 2% are still paying childcare fees despite not having access to this service.

Most of them – 57.5% – are currently working remotely (both full or part-time), while 32% are unable to work from home (for example, construction workers) – a bigger proportion of people than in the rest of the areas analyses. Although in full or part-time employment, 7.5% are currently not working due to the fact they are in furlough or have COVID-19 symptoms and are self-isolating.

Only 9.1% of our Midlands sample are self-employed/freelancing – a proportionally smaller part of the population when compared to the south of the country. These professionals are one of the demographics more severely impacted by the pandemic.

6.7% of our Midlands sample describe themselves as key workers. Whilst the majority of these key workers don't have anyone in their care, out of the 30% that have children under their care, only half are receiving support in this area. Out of this group, 7.5% have adults at home requiring care – proportionally more than, for example, the 5% in North West.
